coronavirus: Why is the outbreak in China affected by economic conditions in a village in India?

Bhagwanpur

village of Madnapur district in the Indian state of West Bengal is about 2799 km from the city of Wuhan, China.  Wuhan is where the Corona virus infection began to spread.

Despite being so far from Wuhan, Bhagwanpur is very much affected by the Corona virus.  Hundreds of people, such as Pothole Beera and Rita Matthi, are living in the area because of the Corona virus.

These guys make wigs with human hair.  They used to produce about 50 tonnes of wigs a month which were shipped to China, but that has stopped for the past two weeks.

Rita Matthi, who runs her home from the business, said: 'We did not know there was going to be a virus attack.  We bought thousands of rupees.

Pothole says: 'They are not able to sell goods in China.  That is why we are not able to pay the balance. '

Hundreds of agents in the area have put together human hair.  When combing hair, those that are trapped in the hair comb sell these agents in small groups.

The hair of men and women of Punjab and Kashmir is considered the best because of its length and is valuable.

Human hair is transported to Bhagwanpur, Chandipur and adjoining areas by truck, trains and even air cargo in sacks.

These hair follicles are washed and washed.  It is then dried, cut into six to 26 inch different sizes and then bundled and shipped to China.

This work of hair is done from factories to homes, but now all this job is stopped.

Sheikh Hasib-ur-Rehman, a major hair exporter, says that due to the corona virus, all my business with China has been halted.  Chinese buyers are unable to come here and we cannot export finished products. '

They claim that more than 80 percent of the people here are unemployed.

Their factory hall is now empty, where until a few weeks ago, about 25 to 30 people worked daily.

Chinese buyers come here all year long.  While this year, all Chinese went to China to celebrate the New Year, after which they could not return.

Ganesh Patnaik is a small hair trader who supplies human hair to home-based women like Pothole and Rita.

He said: 'I have not been paid for two weeks.  I'm being assured to pay the balance due for the 20th of this month, but I don't believe it. '

They say, "If this hair trade is completely closed, I don't know what else I will do."

The hair trade is the cornerstone of the region's economy.  Its sudden closure is affecting others as well.

Sheikh Alexander sells tobacco at Bhagwanpur bus stand.  He said: 'I have a small shop.  But I am still infected with the Corona virus.  My business has also declined.  If the hair business is affected, it will affect all other vendors. '
